Give Nothing to Racism

'Give Nothing to Racism'

Title : Give Nothing to Racism

Brand : New Zealand Human Rights Commission

Agency : Clemenger BBDO Wellington

As Kiwis, our understanding of racism was extreme, overt, systemic racism. We didn’t believe in its right to exist in any way, but it wasn’t really ‘in our world’, it wasn’t ours to solve.

We dismissed ourselves from having a part in racism. But racial prejudice and intolerance can exist in small, quiet places, in our everyday lives. When it becomes normalized it becomes part of the fabric of society. The objective of the NZ Human Rights Commission is to create a culture in which racist attitudes, statements and actions are considered unacceptable by a majority of New Zealanders. We needed individuals, businesses and organizations to see they had a role in eliminating racism in NZ.

When it comes to appeals, everyone understands that every little bit makes a difference. So our appeal did the same, with New Zealander of the Year Taika Waititi challenging the nation with the question: what will you give to racism?

This made even the smallest bit count, so people felt less comfortable feeding it, tolerating it, and allowing it to grow, and committed instead to giving racism no laughs, no smiles, no positive reactions, no support.

Give Nothing to Racism’ gave the country, media, education system, political system, workplaces a standard to live up to, and kicked off a national conversation.

Viewed more times than our entire population, the campaign has reached 187 countries, been covered extensively by national news. 79% who saw it recognized small acts of racism as harmful. 1 in 4 talked with others as a result. Give Nothing has become a standard adopted by ordinary Kiwis, businesses and schools, many now working on policies to minimise racism. Three major cities adopted it. Mayors started a conversation people were too nervous to have. NZ’s professional body for teachers is introducing bias-reduction tools in classrooms.  By supporting it, major companies make it safe for staff to talk about racism.
